Ottawa Senators to retire Daniel Alfredsson’s #11

“We are very excited to announce that the Senators Player Honouring Committee has unanimously decided that as we embark on the Ottawa Senators 25th season in the National Hockey League, this would be the ideal time to have Daniel’s number 11 raised to the rafters of Canadian Tire Centre”, said Senators owner and chief executive officer Eugene Melnyk.

A historic accomplishment for Daniel Alfredsson. The start time for that game has been pushed to 8:00pm ET to accommodate the pre-game festivities.

Alfredsson is the first player to have his jersey retired in the modern era of the franchise. He recorded 426 goals and 1,108 points in the process, putting up all but 49 of his career National Hockey League points with the Senators. The only other retired jersey is Frank Arthur Finnigan’s number 8.

Alfredsson, who was on hand with owner Eugene Melnyk, senior adviser Bryan Murray and GM Pierre Dorion during the splashy announcement at the CTC, was a unanimous choice by the player honouring committee that was formed last summer. He signed a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Senators on December 4, 2014 and took one final skate in his No. 11 jersey during the pre-game warmup.

There will never be another Ottawa Senators player like Daniel Alfredsson – and now there will never be another player to wear the No. 11 jersey he made famous. He served as the club’s captain for 13 seasons (1999-2013) and is its all-time leader in numerous categories, including goals (426), assists (682), points (1,108) playoff games (121), goals (51), assists (49) and points (100).
