Our thoughts on the GBBO Finale..
“I think the only thing missing was banter, it was more competitive and didn’t have as many personalities – it wasn’t as light-hearted as past year”. Every contestant bounced from being star baker to jeopardy of going home at numerous points throughout the series, including the three that made it into the final.

“I chose to fail on the box and make the brandy snaps, which I knew my daughter loves and I wanted to finish them for her, and at the end of the day abandoning the box actually saved me”.
“What a journey. Thanks #GBBO” A constant high performer, Nadiya was the stand-out contestant of Wednesday.’s remaining, impressing the judges with a sentimental Showstopper Cake, impressed by her own wedding. She then posted “p.s. i always, as a wise twitter person once said, tweet w the aim of losing my worst followers so farewell poopheads”.
But it was Nadiya who triumphed over all of them when she served up a saree wedding cake so neat it looked like it had been moulded from stone, and so delicious Paul looked a little bit lost for words.
And though she may have been crowned the nation’s best amateur baker, Nadiya didn’t want any cake at her big Bake Off victory celebration: “I’ve had enough now, just for one night, I haven’t baked any cake” she said. It’s like acrobatics, I had no idea my face did that.
“My best moment in the tent I think I would go back to bread week mainly because I was in my element.”, he said. So my husband and I did get our wedding cake after all’.
The final three are making a few very interesting flavours, Nadiya is doing a lemon drizzle, Ian a carrot cake and Tamal a sticky toffee fruit pudding cake. Yum. When she came last in the technical bake in the first week, I wouldn’t have imagined her in the final, but as the weeks went on she grew. I have to say that this challenge isn’t as tricky as last years.
Nadiya was congratulated by runners-up Tamal Ray and Ian Cumming, who were both gracious in their defeat.
She said that in contrast to other rounds, she was much more confident going into the final.
“I’m just as British as anyone else, and I hope I have proved that”, she said.
Ian has made an elderflower dough and a spiced cardamom one – they sound awesome, but he forgets to put the sugar in one and his icing skills seem to have deserted him at the last minute.
Hollywood added: “All three bakers pushed the boat out for the final, but it’s all about keeping calm and being consistent throughout”.
