Al-Nimr, however, also spoke out against the Iranian-backed government in Syria for killing protesters there. There are also fears al-Nimr’s execution could spark new unrest among Saudi Arabia’s Shia minority.

The game began as a defensive trench fight, the kind the ‘Cats rode to victory against Stanford and Duke when they were still unranked underdogs. Tennessee’s defense allowed only 261 yards and forced four turnovers in the win.

Some were beheaded with a sword while others were executed by firing squad, said ministry spokesman Mansur al-Turki. Saudi Arabia has executed 47 people on Saturday in connection with terrorism charges, media reports said.

The loss gives Northwestern a 10-3 record to finish the year, tying the best win total in Pat Fitzgerald’s 10-year tenure as head coach.

All season long, Michigan State struggled running the ball, as it averaged only 3.97 yards per carry during the regular season. And Coker, thanks in no small part to the efforts of his receivers, was excellent: 25-of-30 for 286 yards and two touchdowns.

Butch Jones has Tennessee in a bowl game for the second straight year, the first time the Vols have done that under the same coach since 2006 and 2007, when Phillip Fulmer was leading the program.

“We want to win a national championship”, said sophomore cornerback Emmanuel Moseley.

“I was thinking the whole time ‘Summer workouts, summer workouts, summer workouts, ‘” Hurd said.

In the second quarter the Vols were once again able to drive deep into Northwestern territory on their first possession.

Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd runs three yards for a touchdown against Northwestern during the third quarter of the Outback Bowl NCAA college football game Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, in Tampa, Fla. For the Volunteers, it’s sophomore Jalen Hurd who earned most of the carries. He finished with 1,344 yards and five touchdowns. “With the environment and everything (the heat), I think it goes back to our strength and conditioning program”. “There was nothing really that was going to stop me from playing”. Anyone can come in there and I don’t care who you are, you’re going to be hurting. “Summer workouts are the hardest conditioning we have”. His 38.3-yard kickoff return average was nearly 10 yards better than the next closest player in the SEC. One bad game against a strong opponent doesn’t outweigh the previous three months, Fitzgerald said. Vols QB Joshua Dobbs has been somewhat inconsistent so if Tennessee can squeeze some production from the running game, the Vols will be Outback Bowl champs. The fifth-year senior, who had 43 receiving yards this season coming in, almost matched that total in the first quarter after he snagged a pass over the middle and took it 42 yards with 2:20 remaining to set up an 14-yard touchdown run by quarterback Josh Dobbs. Dobbs fumbled the shotgun snap on the play, picked it up at the 27, and then raced right around the edge before tip-toeing down the sideline for his second touchdown on the ground. The Vols had 197 yards to Northwestern’s 127 in the first half.

Two offenses largely trying to find their way early struggled to make huge gains in the first quarter. Joshua Dobbs ran for 48 yards and two touchdowns, and Alvin Kamara added 53 rushing yards and one score.

The Vols, however, came right back. Northwestern’s quarterbacks went a combined 14-of-33 passing for 129 yards yards and four interceptions. The Vols drove 75 yards downfield and Dobbs rushed untouched 14 yards into the endzone.

The 100-yard performance was the ninth of Hurd’s career, sixth this season.

PROUD TRADITION: Tennessee is appearing in a bowl game for the 52nd time, tied for fourth all-time behind Alabama (63), Texas (52) and Nebraska (5-2). Below is everything you need to know about the matchup, including the Outback Bowl live stream, TV broadcast information, game notes and prediction.

With the NU offensive unable to move the ball, the defense spent seemingly all afternoon on the field, finally crumbling in the second half.

Even before the bowl, the Vols showed they were trending upwards, accomplishing things, like eight wins and an Outback Bowl trip, that hadn’t been done since the Phillip Fulmer days.
