Outgoing Boehner Rails Against Republican ‘False Prophets’ on Face the Nation

Sunday morning talk news shows picked up on the questions that loom around a potential government shutdown and the circumstances of Boehner’s resignation. And while Boehner answered with a clear “no” when asked whether there would be a government shutdown, he also said it will surely take Democratic votes in order to get a temporary funding extension approved.

“I’ll refer you to my remark at a fundraiser I made in August in Steamboat Springs, Colorado”, Boehner responded.

During the interview, which was the first following his shocking resignation on Friday (25 September), Boehner said he “absolutely” believed that the more conservative members of the GOP had been unrealistic.

Mr. Boehner announced on Friday that he would be resigning from Congress at the end of October. Beyond that, he said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday he expects “I might have a little more cooperation from some around town to try to get as much finished as possible”.

“I don’t want to leave my successor a dirty barn”.

Boehner appeared to become emotional during the interview and said he hopes he’s remembered as a “good man” after he’s left his leadership position.

The advice Boehner said he’d offer the next speaker sounded similar to his criticism of his party’s right wing.

“A lot of the people who are doing the complaining and saying, why isn’t anything getting done – maybe they ought to look in the mirror”, Kasich said.

Boehner’s tenure as Speaker has been marked by regular clashes with hardline conservative Republicans who oppose compromise on a host of issues.

Representative Elijah Cummings also had some things to say about the upcoming investigation, telling The Washington PostHouse Republicans already have three standing committees with subpoena power conducting one-sided, biased attacks against Planned Parenthood, so it is unclear why they need a fourth”. The House will take up the Senate bill”.

The Roman-Catholic Ohio congressman described spending the day with his spiritual leader as deeply moving and a factor in the timing of his resignation announcement. “Because they’re going to get criticized at home by some who think that we ought to be more aggressive”.

“What have they accomplished?” he said. While loyal to Boehner, McCarthy has built personal relationships with conservative groups and tacked right recently to back the shutdown of the Export-Import bank.

“Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves appreciates the public service Boehner’s given over the past several years but feels a change in leadership is needed”.
