Ovechkin ignites Capitals in third-period comeback
Carlson is expected to sit out his third consecutive game with a lower-body ailment while Beagle suffered an upper-body injury in Wednesday’s victory over the Buffalo Sabres – Washington’s ninth win in a row – and will be placed on injured reserve as he awaits surgery.

Defenseman John Carlson missed his second straight game with an upper-body injury.
Backstrom’s injury was not disclosed and he could play today at the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Capitals lost centers Nicklas Backstrom and Jay Beagle to injuries in the second period, but Alex Ovechkin scored either side of strikes from Marcus Johansson and Andre Burakovsky in the third as Washington came storming back for a win that puts them 12 points clear in the Eastern Conference. Cammalleri scored both his goals in the first period.
Brian Gionta’s first-period goal gave the Sabres an early lead, and goalie Chad Johnson helped Buffalo hold it until late in the second period despite heavy pressure from the Capitals. Trotz said the center will travel with the team and could play at Carolina.
Ovechkin tied the score at 2 early the third period and added an empty-netter with 1:13 remaining.
Washington has earned a point in 15 of its last 16 games and trails the Dallas Stars by one point for the National Hockey League lead. Capitals goalie Braden Holtby turned aside 25 shots.
Crosby scored his eighth and Chris Kunitz his fifth, and Murray made 34 saves for Pittsburgh. The team ruled him out during the second intermission.
“We exchange power plays in the third period there and we have an opportunity to go up in the game with a power play, and then when (Washington) gets theirs they go up with it”, Sabres head coach Dan Byslma said.
Ovechkin’s last goal was an empty-netter.
The Maple Leafs, who lost to the New York Islanders on Tuesday, had been 0-6-2 in the second game of back-to-backs. Johnson fumbled the puck behind the net and gave it away to Justin Williams, who scored the easiest goal of his life to open the scoring for Washington.
In Pittsburgh, P.A. Parenteau and Peter Holland had goals in the shootout to help Toronto beat the hosts.
Sharks 4, Flyers 2: SAN JOSE, Calif. – Joe Pavelski scored twice in the third period as San Jose snapped a four-game home losing streak.
