Ovechkin keeps Caps alive with big night
(AP Photo/Nick Wass). Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin, of Russian Federation, celebrates his goal during the first period of Game 5 in an NHL hockey Stanley Cup Eastern Conference semifinals Pittsburgh Penguins, Saturday, May 7, 2016, in Washington.

Washington got its first crack at that when Alex Ovechkin plowed toward the net, drawing a hooking penalty by Bryan Rust less than four minutes into the game.
The loss adds to existing frustration for the Capitals, who dropped to 3-6 in their past nine games when outshooting opponents, including their past two in which they have tallied 40 or more shots on goal.
Ovechkin threw his body around, skated around and through Pittsburgh’s defense and scored a power-play goal to help the host Capitals beat the Penguins 3-1 in Game 5 on Saturday night.
Pittsburgh’s 3-2 thriller over top-seeded Washington in Game 4 on Wednesday night did more than give the Penguins a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Ovechkin looked like a man determined not to let the Capitals go quietly into the offseason.
Washington got the best of Pittsburgh and would rise to the occasion on home ice.
“I think we’re fine with that, too”, Alzner said.
“When we have pressure, it’s our time”, Ovechkin said. “The guys responded well”.
“They were able to sway momentum with their power play twice”, Lovejoy said.
The first period ended in a 1-1 tie with both goals coming on power plays.
Despite an 0-for-14 showing on the power play and being outshot in each of the last two matchups, the Penguins hold a 3-1 series advantage by making the most of their even-strength opportunities and the 21-year-old Murray outplaying Vezina Trophy favorite Braden Holtby. Trevor Daley (6) and Brian Dumoulin (8) celebrate Cullen’s goal during the second period of Game 4 in an NHL hockey Stanley Cup Eastern Conference sem. Meanwhile, Holtby was stellar and at his best when he stopped three in a less than minute on Evgeni Malkin, Patric Hornqvist and Justin Schultz.
As for playing with Ovechkin, Kuznetsov said the two are familiar with each other from their stints on the ice together the past couple of seasons. The Verizon Center crowd cheered his name appreciatively, suddenly hopeful that maybe the Capitals would find themselves back in this arena for a Game 7. “If we can do more of the same, I think we’ll be on the right side of things after Game 6”. “Some nights you can make those saves”.
Justin Williams also found the back of the net for the first time in this series, and the streaky goal scorer could start to make some noise on the third line. The bad news was that a few minutes later, the Penguins would answer with a goal of their own, tying the game at 1.
The Penguins’ rookie goalie is the breakout star of the postseason, with a.944 save percentage and six wins to his name.
It didn’t take long for a response from Pittsburgh, however.
Alex Ovechkin did everything he could to keep the Washington Capitals’ season alive.
The St. Louis Blues claimed the advantage in their NHL Stanley Cup play-off series against the Dallas Stars with a dominant 4-1 win on Saturday.
It’s why while head coach Barry Trotz also talks to his goalie once in a while, he leaves the heavy lifting to Korn, who was also with Trotz with the Nashville Predators and did tremendous work with Pekka Rinne. According to WhoWins.com, home teams are 45-16 (.738) in potential Game 6 conference semifinal closeout games.
NOTES: Washington had killed off 37 of 38 in the playoffs before Kunitz’s goal. The Capitals scratched D Nate Schmidt, who struggled in Game 3.

Such performances have been par for the course for Pittsburgh since Sullivan replaced Mike Johnston in mid-December.
