US forces had been watching Raso Camp for several weeks, said Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman.
The United States said Somalia’s army successfully conducted a mission to disrupt an illegal taxation checkpoint set up by al Shabab Islamist militants south of the capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, and said American forces were present at the raid.
The Pentagon said Monday that the airstrikes killed fighters who were preparing to launch a large-scale attack, likely against African Union or USA personnel.
There was no immediate Al-Shabaab response to the claim that Ugas and Mire had been killed.
These tactics have made Al-Shabaab a target, with the United States, African Union and others often helping Somalia’s government in going after the terrorist group. He said the USA estimated that as many as 200 fighters had been there, including a number of trainers.
No group has so far claimed the attack but Al-Qaeda insurgents, the Shebab, which is fighting to overthrow the internationally backed government frequently deploys vehicle bombs.
It was not immediately possible to obtain any US comment.
He said the commandos carried rocket launchers and M16 rifles – referring to a weapon used by US forces although Abu Musab did not mention any nationality.
The Islamic extremist group said Wednesday that its fighters had foiled an attempt by foreign forces to raid an al-Shabab-held town in southern Somalia during the night.
However, Al-Shabaab denied the Pentagon report in in a short statement posted on the group’s Twitter account.
