– Marin County has just seen its first sign of West Nile Virus this year.

Officials with the Monmouth County Mosquito Control Division will conduct ground spraying in Wall and in parts of Spring Lake Heights on Tuesday night as a precaution. “It is also important to keep in mind to always wear insect repellent when outdoors, even if it is only for a few minutes”. “Most people who contract West Nile virus, about 70-80 percent, don’t get sick but those who do can be severely ill”, said Dr. Lon Kightlinger, state epidemiologist for the department.

West Nile is one of three mosquito-borne diseases that are spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. The virus can cause febrile (fever) illness, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord), according to the Centers for Disease Control.

DiMaso urged residents in Monmouth County to wear mosquito repellants and remove standing water from their properties.
