Over 300 arrested, five people stabbed at Notting Hill Carnival in London

A year ago a spokesman for Lily Allen released a statement telling fans she was “fine” after pictures were released that appeared to show her passed out on the grass in the VIP section of Glastonbury.

In the second stabbing, a 20-year-old man was injured on Portobello Road, one of the main streets in the district.

Police said 105 people had been arrested by the end of Sunday, for reasons that included drug possession, carrying knives, assault, sexual offenses and theft.

Canisters of nitrous oxide – more commonly known as “laughing gas” – and lager which were being sold illegally have been seized by police at the Notting Hill Carnival.

There were 156 arrests on Sunday, and 284 up to 11.45pm on Monday.

Met Police Carnival spokeswoman Superintendent Robyn Williams said: “The technology involves the use of overt cameras which scan the faces of those passing by and flag up potential matches against a database of custody images”.

The Notting Hill Carnival, which has taken place annually since 1964, is expected to attract over a million people.

On Sunday, a 14-year-old was arrested after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed on Wornington Road in Kensington and Chelsea. Both were taken to hospital and both boys’ conditions are not life threatening. This year sees the 50th Carnival in west London, incorporating 60 bands and 38 sound systems.

In the fourth incident, a man presented himself to officers at Kensal Rise tube station and told them he had received a cut to his hand after being stabbed.

Metropolitan Police tweeted a photo of nitrous oxide canisters and alcohol seized by officers at the carnival.

Officers understand that the canister has the capacity to fill 2,250 small canisters representing a total street value of over £150,000.

The paper had claimed the “Smile” singer passed out after partying at the London event over the weekend, with snaps appearing to show her taking swigs from various different drinks, before being carried by lover MC Meridian Dan.

As the sun went down on Monday evening people kept dancing and drinking.

It is this historic event that is considered by many to be the true beginning of Notting Hill Carnival. Dressed in an elaborate Dominator costume which cost £170 to match the 50 Shades Of Paradise float, she said: “It’s a lovely wonderful atmosphere to be part of a truck”.

Teacher Jan Harvey, who is originally from Jamaica, said: “Everybody is enjoying themselves, there is no trouble and there is a good atmosphere”.
