Over 5000 pregnant Colombian women infected with Zika virus

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes have claimed that the current outbreak of the Zika virus will not affect this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Zika virus is transmitted through sex and by mosquitoes in the daytime.

According to the president, the Rio de Janeiro is one of the priority sites for the fight against mosquitoes, precisely because of the Olympics.

Overall, the outbreak has affected 26,542 people and 5,013 pregnant women, the country’s healthcare institute data reported in an epidemiology bulletin.

Overall, about 15 groups are working on Zika vaccines.

Talbot, the infectious disease expert at Dartmouth, who also is New Hampshire’s deputy state epidemiologist, said “very active investigations” into a causal link between Zika and birth defects are under way now.

The team with the University Network for Environment and Health also noted that Zika virus outbreaks have previously occurred in other areas with no reports of microcephaly.
