Overnight flash floods kill 30 people in northern Pakistan

Around 30 houses were demolished in the rainstorm caused by continuous heavy rainfall that began late yesterday and were concentrated mainly in the northwestern province of Khybher Pakthunkwa.

Worshipers were offering taraweeh, the extra prayer performed by Sunni Muslims at night during Ramadan, he said.

Osama Ahmad Warraich, deputy commissioner of Chitral, said that at least 11 people were still missing.

Rescue and relief operations were underway, he added.

About 30 people were reported injured.

An army spokesperson said military helicopters have joined the rescue efforts, which had been impeded by the remoteness of the effected areas.

Separately, in Haripur district of KPK, four people were killed and four others injured when roof of their work site collapsed near Tarbela Dam area, Latifur Rehman, spokesperson for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said.

The army has been taking part in rescue operations in the affected areas together with the district administration.
