Overnight violence in Ferguson

According to CBS Evening News, a state of emergency has been declared in Ferguson, Missouri by St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger.

The first anniversary of the murder of unarmed Black teen Michael Brown by former Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson was marked by teargas and the shooting of another Black male.

According to St. Louis Today, a man that was shot in the officer-involved shootout that occurred during the Ferguson protests one-year anniversary on Sunday (Aug. 9) has been confirmed as Tyrone Harris Jr. Then he ran toward a fenced area, where he continued firing – until officers struck him multiple times, Belmar said. What prompted the shooting wasn’t clear, but Belmar said the groups had been feuding. “Police understand they are now under the microscope”, said Mark Lomax, executive director of the National Tactical Officers Association, said.

Police said Mr Harris was being treated in hospital.

“We can’t sustain this as a community”, he said, the Post-Dispatch reported.

“There is a small group of people out there that are intent on making sure that peace doesn’t prevail”, he said.

Early Monday morning, a 17-year-old and a 19-year-old were walking on a sidewalk near the Michael Brown memorial when they were shot at from an unknown auto, police said.

Harris allegedly used a stolen 9mm Sig Sauer semiautomatic pistol to fire gunshots at four St. Louis County plainclothes detectives riding in a vehicle.

Belmar added that the police shooting took place after two separate groups in the vicinity had traded a “remarkable” amount of gunfire – between 40 and 50 shots. “What we believe is that what happened last night shows the necessity of action of the (U.S. Department of Justice)”.

However, the peaceful protests were disrupted by gunfire on Sunday night.
