Overwatch Will Offer Heroes and Maps for Free After Launch

Overwatch launches Spring 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The announcement of free characters and locales also means there’s no – as of yet revealed – plan for monetization. In a video address, game director Jeff Kaplan said the team at Blizzard is “really proud” of the 21 heroes that will be available at launch, but said the team is already thinking about more characters and arenas that will launch sometime down the road. Instead of complicating the player experience with paid DLC, it will be free. “We have ideas for additional maps and heroes that we’d like to add to the game. Hopefully that alleviates some concern that people have”. Freemium games either give you very limited gaming features or just lack any ability to play the game in any real way without spending far more than you would on the game if they charged you $5 dollars or even $50 for some games.

Blizzard says that it wants to continue to test the game with an increasing number of players but that it will first take down the beta on December 10 to make some tweaks to both the core mechanics and the server infrastructure. This includes the ability to turn music off, provide more details about kills in the game, and also the ability to skip the Kill Cam. Kaplan has returned in another developer update for the game, and gamers should be pleased with his comments about post-launch content. The developer update can be seen below. That’s pretty sweet, and it doesn’t divide players who may jump into the game later into its release.
