Owen Smith challenges Jeremy Corbyn over response to antisemitism in Labour Party
Corbyn is backed by Momentum, a mass movement of Labour members, who have turned out in their droves at rallies around the country in recent days, hailing the Labour leader as a genuine alternative to mainstream politicians.

“We need to be more than radical: we need to be credible; we need to look and sound like people that the country can trust”, Smith said, citing polls that show Corbyn’s personal ratings lag far behind May’s, even among some people who voted for the party in the general election previous year.
Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith engaged in a bitter and argumentative battle over the leadership of the Labour Party in the first head-to-head debate on Thursday, as the audience loudly booed, heckled and cheered.
Mr Smith also accused Mr Corbyn of failing to do enough to campaign for Britain to stay in the European Union or to stamp out anti-Semitism in the Labour Party. Cheers from supporters watching the speech drowned out the rest of the answer.
Corbyn was defiant about his performance in the referendum campaign, pointing out that he had made more media appearances than the rest of the shadow cabinet put together.
In an attack on his internal critics, Mr Corbyn stressed his support among grassroots members and said that MPs should recognise that the “structure of our party has changed”.
Mr Corbyn’s critics have claimed he would not be able to win enough of the centre ground to seal a General Election victory, with Owen Smith tipped as having broader appeal. Corbyn said this would be financed by a resultant stronger economy and by cracking down on tax evasion.
But Mr Smith retorted: “I think we have got to do more than that. No short-term measures, no short-term suspension – they would be out and they would never come back to the Labour party”. We should say we would love to report on UK FTTP coverage rising a lot more rapidly than it is, but beyond lots of talking very few are putting the money where it matters so that in the next five to ten years we can catch up and surpass other countries.
She said: “The whole point of expediting the case is so that if we do win, the excluded members can be on the voting lists before they are finalised on August 8”.
“But, despite that, the people gathered here today have been very keen to get their opinions across”. “Two million Labour voters are telling us they would rather have a Tory prime minister than a Labour government and that’s got to be a wake-up call to everyone in this party”, he said. Smith, on the other hand, is the proffered choice among most Labour MPs.
“The assembly election results, we gained some seats as well as losing one”, he said. It was set up in 2008 after the Fathers 4 Justice group was shut down.
Alan Ward, RLA chairman said the plans would be spell disaster for private renters. “When you reach some limits of monetary policy you reach for fiscal stimulus”. He described the message coming from some of Smith’s friends as a threat and said he did not think that was acceptable.
