Mr Greenwood was an Oxford graduate who had written two historical biographies and traded rare and antiquarian books as well as art.
Thames Valley Police said formal identification was due to take place earlier today, but officers said they are satisfied the man is 42-year-old Mr Greenwood.
Thames Valley Police are yet to recover the murder weapon, which they believe is a bladed item.
Mr Greenwood gained national media attention in 2010 when one of his first edition Harry Potter books, worth £6,000, was stolen from an exhibition gallery in Woodstock, Oxfordshire.
A 26-year-old man arrested on suspicion of Mr Greenwood’s murder was released without charge on Saturday afternoon. It’s crucial that anyone with any information about Mr Greenwood’s background or the murder comes forward as soon as possible. The post-mortem confirmed that Mr Greenwood died following a vicious and sustained attack.
He said police are keeping an open mind about the motive for the killing and would like to hear from anyone with information.
‘It is very likely that the offender may have injuries as a result of this altercation’.
“The investigation team would like to hear from anyone who has details about Mr Greenwood’s associates, or anyone or has had a personal or business engagement with him in the last few weeks”.
Greenwood, who was known for selling rare first editions of modern books, was last seen alive on Tuesday, when he was captured on CCTV entering a Sainsbury’s supermarket.
Brown said: “If you saw or heard anything unusual in the vicinity of 25 Iffley Road, between about 4pm on Tuesday and about 3pm on Thursday, please come forward”.
A blue tent was erected outside the house, whilst Forensic teams searched through bins, hedges and drains along the street.
Rev James Paice, 44, studied at Christ Church, Oxford University, with Mr Greenwood in the early 90s. Supt Chris Ward stated that “we know Mr. Greenwood had a number of businesses so anyone that had dealt with him from a business point of view or anybody that had a personal relationship with him – we will treat all of that information sensitively”.
The thief then abandoned the book outside Boots cosmetic shop in Abingdon.
“There is still a cordon at the scene, which is expected to remain for a number of days”.
