Hockey fans who love to hate Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban might need to reevaluate their thinking.
Subban signed an eight-year deal worth $72 million prior to the beginning of last season.
Some of Subban’s contribution will go to a fund called P.K.’s Helping Hands, which will help families of sick children through their financial difficulties, reports CBC.
“P.K.is a person of character, who strives for success, always working at new ways to stay on top of his game and he understands the value of teamwork”, says Martine Alfonso, Associate Executive Director of the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
P.K. Subban’s family and Jean Béliveau’s widow, Élise (left) were in the audience for the announcement this morning.
“It is really an fantastic feeling to be here”, Subban said.
“I am proud to walk in the footsteps of my idol, Jean Béliveau.”
Ladies and gentlemen, the PK Subban Atrium at the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
When asked about why he chose to make such a large donation, Subban replied: “Why not?”
“I worked in a school 25 years as a principal and I was a leader because a leader helped people to grow and get better and that’s how I see P.K.”, he said.
“It’s not what you get in life, but it’s what you give…that’s what teachers do”.
He said the money was not about accolades, but about giving back to a city that’s given him so much.

Although Subban is a highly paid professional athlete (he’s fifth in salary in the National Hockey League behind only Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin), his $10 million commitment still represent a massive amount.
