Attorney General Kathleen Kane showed little emotion as jurors announced their verdict late Monday.
After Kane’s conviction Monday, Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman Rob Gleason said it was “a bad day for the Commonwealth”. Closing arguments are set for Monday, Aug. 15, 2016. Attorney General Kane has been convicted of serious charges.
Jurors deliberating criminal charges against Pennsylvania’s attorney general have asked to review her grand jury testimony as they weigh perjury and false-swearing charges against her.
Fina was later hired by Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams and helped successfully prosecute five of the six Democrats who’d been caught in the original sting.
“Attorney General Kathleen Kane’s conviction today marks a sad day in the history of Pennsylvania and the culmination of a very troubling series of events that have distracted the Office of Attorney General from its mission to protect the people of Pennsylvania from crime and fraud”.
In terms of Porngate, Kane’s attorneys wanted to show she was the victim of a vindictive prosecution because she had uncovered raunchy emails.
Judge Wendy Demchick-Alloy warned Kane any attempt to retaliate against witnesses would mean her immediate arrest.
Whatever the trial’s outcome, her 800-person agency has been in turmoil for the past two years, plagued by a revolving door of top managers; a special investigation of the leak that led up to the boss; and the deployment of Kane’s driver to snoop through office emails and keep tabs on who was cooperating.
Kane, who was the first woman and Democrat elected to serve as the state’s attorney general, was seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party. Kane, who is out on bail, was also found guilty of leaking “a 2009 grand jury probe to embarrass a rival prosecutor”.
Farber says top deputy Adrian King went beyond his authority to get the files to a reporter through Kane’s political consultant.
“Where is my story? I’m dying here”, she texted Morrow as the Philadelphia Daily News reporter worked on the story, according to texts shown to the jury.
A top deputy told the jury he was alarmed when he saw the June 2014 article. Kane decided on Friday not to testify at her trial or put on any defense witnesses.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the possibility of Kane resigning “will be dealt with in the next several days”, her lawyer Gerald Shargel said. The defense said Kane wouldappeal. She faces up to seven years in prison for each of two felony perjurycounts. “I believed this when she was charged, and today, after conviction, there should be no question that she should resign immediately”, Wolf said. The state Supreme Court suspended her law license, and she has drained campaign funds to pay legal bills. However, officials in Pennsylvania do not have to resign over misconduct until they are sentenced.
He and his co-prosecutor, Michelle Henry from the Bucks County district attorney’s office, said they believed the evidence was overwhelming.
