The Argentina global, who is yet to make an appearance this season, has confirmed he has suffered a knee injury in training.

The injury leaves Bacary Sagna as City’s only senior right-back.

Top of the Premier League table on goal difference following a 3-0 win over defending champions Chelsea last weekend, City visit Everton on Sunday.

City signed Zabaleta’s fellow countryman Nicolas Otamendi from Valencia this week.

But Pellegrini says it was important to bolster the central defensive ranks with captain Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis likely to face a heavy workload this season. We analysed different options and we decided that Nicolas Otamendi was the best option.

He added that at the moment through with the form that Kompany and Mangala are in, they are the first choice still and he’s delighted that we are defensively in a “good moment” ourselves having kept clean sheets and he hopes that will continue.

“The window closes in September, before that no one knows what will happen”, he said. I don’t talk about rumours.

Pellegrini said: “Pablo Zabaleta, he had a problem in training and I think will be out for about a month with a ligament problem”. “When things are finished, then I can talk about them”.
