Pac-12 Preview: #7 UCLA vs Arizona State

The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on FOX. Hundley led the team on that scoring drive after UCLA took over with 1:33 to play following a Sun Devil touchdown which had made the score 43-42.

Doug Keith: As much as I hate to say ASU needs to win this one. “I’m disappointed”, Sun Devils’ coach Todd Graham said after Tuesday’s practice.

“I expect our fans to be disappointed”.

However, neither team looked its best for a considerable portion of the half.

The offense sputtered from the get-go.

Upon closer inspection, the Wildcats ran virtually at will against the Bruins defense, but UCLA came away with the all-important win and might just be capable of absorbing personnel losses that would undoubtedly send most programs tumbling out of the national rankings. If this game were lined before the season started, UCLA might only be favored by four or five points. Arizona State’s D.J. Foster has caught a pass in 44 straight games.

“It seems like when we go tempo, when we spread out and he’s reacting, he really has a great feel for the game”, he said. Brimhall managed to push forward for three yards, but the Sun Devils were forced to punt after an overthrow by Bercovici on third down. “We’ve had discussions with them after that acquisition took place and ultimately our board rejected their proposal”.

The series will do well to test the Titans’ abilities on the ice as they take on ASU’s club hockey team. “If you get everybody on the same page and knowing that what we did Saturday doesn’t satisfy us… if everybody can see that vision and that goal we’ll be a pretty solid football team”. If it can just eliminate the mistakes, the Sun Devils might be ripe for a bounce-back effort this week. This was a squad that had only 13 turnovers all of last season and a +14 turnover margin. Paul Perkins is 10th nationally with 525 yards rushing. – LB Kenny Young, on last week’s 56-30 win at Arizona.

Finish in the red zone: In 18 trips inside the red zone this season, the Sun Devils have scored 14 times (11 touchdowns, three field goals). Stanford has now covered their last 3 games in a row after the disturbing Week 1 loss to Northwestern, while Arizona got blown out at home last week, and is dealing with numerous key injury issues on both sides of the ball, most importantly to QB Anu Solomon. ASU has been better against the pass (5th in Pac-12) than the run (10th) this season, but that is mostly due to the fact that they played two run-heavy, triple options teams in nonconference play (Cal Poly and New Mexico).

Graham loves to bring pressure, and UCLA had trouble protecting its quarterback the last three seasons.

Freshman quarterback Josh Rosen threw for 284 yards and two scores without a pick, which was a welcome improvement after his performance against BYU two weeks ago.

Each level of the defense has been hit hard, as defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes, linebacker Myles Jack and cornerback Fabian Moreau are all lost for the year. It’s just adding another year to his deal with I believe a $200,000 raise.
