‘Pacific Rim 2’ Adds Newcomer Cailee Spaeny as Female Lead
Variety report that Cailee Spaeny, an actress and singer with only two screen credits to her name, has landed the female lead in director Steven S DeKnight’s follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 monsters-versus-robots movie.

Sorry for being a bit down on Pacific Rim but I was shown the Travis Beacham sceenplay over a year before it was released and was so excited to see it eventually manifested on screen.
Directed by Steven S. DeKnight from a script from Jon Spaights, the film now stars John Boyega.
Spaeny joins a cast that now includes John Boyega, Scott Eastwood and Ron Perlman who is returning as Hannibal Chau.

This is a breakout role for Spaeny, who has so far only appeared in the indie thriller Counting to 1,000. Character details are unknown with regard to whom Spaeny will be playing. In general, plot details have been kept under wraps for the sequel, other than the fact Boyega will portray the son of Stacker Pentecost (portrayed by Idris Elba in the first film). Cale Boyter will exec produce. It has already been (sadly) confirmed that Charlie Hunnam will not be returning as jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket. Production on Maelstrom is slated to begin this November (so expect a lot more casting announcements in the coming months) in Australia, with a portion of filming also taking place in China. It will be released February 23, 2018 by Universal Pictures around the world with the exception of China.
