Packers’ Bryan Bulaga has strained MCL, avoids ACL tear

The Packers will likely be without starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga on Sunday after he suffered an MCL sprain in his left knee during practice Thursday.

Green Bay lost Pro Bowl receiver Jordy Nelson for the season to a knee injury in a preseason game four weeks ago. “He will be out this week”. He is still going through the evaluation process.

If Barclay is chosen as the starter against the Seattle Seahawks, he will draw on experience gleaned from the 2013 season, when Bulaga was sidelined for the entire year after suffering a knee injury in training camp. Head Coach Mike McCarthy mentioned Don Barclay and JC Tretter as the candidates to replace Bulaga vs. the Seahawks, but he did not name a starter. The team initially feared that Bulaga had torn his ACL, but the six-year veteran was later diagnosed with a strained MCL. He was added to the injury report as a limited participant at practice.

His assignment was doubly tough, coming off the long layoff and playing left tackle for the first time in his career, filling in for David Bakhtiari.

The loss of Bulaga comes after starting LB Sam Barrington left the Packers’ opening-day win at Chicago with what turned out to be a season-ending foot injury.

Bulaga will undergo additional testing on Friday to assess the severity of the injury, according to ESPN. He told reporters late Thursday that he’s had plenty of reps at right tackle and right guard and feels fine.

“Me personally, they made a decision to throw another football game in there, it shows they really don’t care about the players”, Beason said.

He got a scare in last year’s regular-season opener in Seattle when he went down again, raising concerns of another torn ACL.

“We still feel good about it”, Julius Peppers said of the Packers’ run defense.
