Packers’ Eddie Lacy Needs To Lose Weight In Offseason, Mike McCarthy Says

Whatever Eddie Lacy ate last offseason that caused him to balloon in weight and lose his effectiveness as a ball carrier, he must not eat as much of it this offseason or he will lose his job with the Green Bay Packers.

Of course, all would have been forgiven if Lacy had put up numbers this season.

Following the Packers’ loss to the Cardinals on Saturday, Mike McCarthy met with reporters in Green Bay early this week to address his concerns heading into the off-season. It’s the third year that players are not grouped by conference but rather via a draft by captains Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin.

“He’s got a lot of work to do”, McCarthy said (via GreenBayPressGazette.com’s Weston Hodkiewicz). “His offseason a year ago was not good enough, and he never recovered from it”, McCarthy said.

Part of Lacy’s problem is his weight, which had likely ballooned out of his normal 230-240 range.

He only had 308 rushing yards in his first eight games in 2015, after finishing with more than 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in each of his first two seasons.

Lacy has some growing up to do if he wants to continue as the starting running back for a playoff team. If you set that run aside, then Lacy gained 91 yards on 23 carries and his per carry average went down to 3.9.

But in the past, Lacy has been able to successfully toe the line between big and overweight.
