Packers get defensive early in Day 3 of National Football League draft

It’s time to go rogue.

And that’s OK. In a forward-thinking draft, general manager Ted Thompson made several selections to stay ahead of the curve and, hopefully, keep the team in the championship chase.

It’s not necessarily how the Packers thought the draft would go. Worthy, a star wide receiver from Troy, was not drafted in 2015 but signed a free agent contract with the Houston Texans.

Packers director of football relations Eliot Wolf said Saturday that Martinez is capable of being a three-down player, and showed an astute ability to provide coverage of tight ends and backs out of the backfield while on The Farm, essentially saying he perceives the 22-year-old as the team’s dime linebacker in passing scenarios. “I think that was a goal of ours”. “Anytime you can add someone to facilitate that, that’s a good thing”.

The Packers will be bigger, stronger and deeper on both lines, though, and it’s hard to find fault with Thompson on that.

Going into a season with such realistic title hopes, why not splurge to address the one lacking aspect? But it indeed is a problem. But for the Packers to remain legit challengers in 2017 and beyond, Thompson needs this group to provide a major second-year payoff. Aside from getting one of the best defensive tackles in the Pac-12 from last season, Green Bay is getting a player that could come in and contribute immediately. He’s coming off an ACL injury in the 2014 opener. Replacement Nate Palmer was, well, not good in his 10 starts. He should mesh nicely with 6-foot, 310-pound defensive lineman Mike Daniels, who, like Clark, has tapped into his high school years as a wrestler to bolster the skill set on the football field.

To Thompson’s credit, he admits temptation. “Yeah, I mean, it’s not written in stone”. That’s actually a situation that’s taken a twist recently.

“It’s a big season ahead of us, be ready to work”, Clark said in relaying the message from Jones. “We felt very comfortable when it looked like we were going to be able to zero in on Kenny when we felt like that was where we wanted to be”.

The Packers didn’t take an inside linebacker in the draft’s first two days, but in the third round they added an outside linebacker for their defense, where they need some depth.

As for Clark, he’ll help fill a hole in Green Bay that was created in March when B.J.

They opened the draft by taking UCLA defensive lineman Kenny Clark with the 27th overall pick.

The Colts also picked speedy Clemson safety T.J. Green with the No. 57 overall pick in the second round.

Former Carroll offensive tackle Josh James is headed to the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers have a chance to be Super again this season, Aaron Rodgers’ 12th in the league. “Now Ive got to prove them right.”.

Now they’re a position or two away from being the biggest.
