Packers limiting Nelson’s work as he starts practicing
Green Bay Packers fans will get a pleasant boost Monday when Jordy Nelson returns to practice for the first time since tearing his ACL last preseason. Last year’s starting center Corey Linsley has not been able to practice due to a hamstring injury.

“Like you said, we got 1000 reps together so I threw a ball to him today, in the 1-on-1 drills against Sam (Shields) and quipped it”. After all, the only time he ran routes against anyone, his fellow receivers Randall Cobb and Davante Adams covered him. We’ll see what we do this week, but I assume, just based off normal progression, that next week we’ll probably get into some competitive periods.
Even Nelson isn’t expecting too much right away, a year after he suffered the ACL injury in a preseason game.
No official word yet on whether Nelson will suit up and play in this Friday’s pre-season game with the San Francisco 49ers.
“Obviously, we’ll take this week’s practice and see how everything goes, and we’ll continue to move forward”, Nelson said. Though Nelson downplayed the severity of the new injury – he described it as a “hiccup” – it sidelined him for the first three weeks of camp, during which time he missed 12 practices. His goal is simple in his long-awaited comeback: Be ready to play this year’s season opener on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 11. “If we miss a play here or there, it’s going to be because we missed all of past year, so we’ll wait and see, but I don’t think it’ll be an issue”.
Nelson enjoyed a brief cameo at Lambeau Field on Thursday when the Packers hosted the Oakland Raiders. He wore his uniform, helmet and pads and went through warmups with the team, including running routes and catching passes.
“It’s the conditioning more than anything, especially being in Jacksonville Week 1”, Nelson said.
Nelson wouldn’t speculate on whether he would be cleared to play as early as Friday’s game against the 49ers, but he reiterated what he’s said all along that his priority is to be ready to play when the regular season starts.
“You guys are bored, and it’s the preseason”, Nelson told them in a joking manner.
Adams, whose locker is next to Nelson’s, took notice of the big media group and wondered aloud in jest why a player who only warmed up before a game would get so much attention.
Coming off the second preseason game, McCarthy said the focus for the team will remain on fundamentals.
The broad smile on Nelson’s face during his brief time on the playing field before Thursday’s game suggested how happy he is to be almost all of the way back from a hard previous year.
“There’s a lot that’s gone into it”, Nelson said. “It’s another step in the right direction”. “Another step in the plan that we have to be ready for Jacksonville. We’ll just continue to work that way”.
