Packers’ Ty Montgomery catching up to win wide receiver job

There was such a crowd of local media around him in the auxiliary area of the Packers’ locker room, where the undrafted players change, that several players wondered what the fuss was all about until first-year tight end Casey Pierce informed them that Steuck is “from here”.

“I’m excited to be a part of this competition right now”, Montgomery said after practice Sunday.

The Packers didn’t have a spot available after Steuck’s tryout in May but told the 6-foot-2, 310-pound offensive lineman from Northern Michigan to stay in shape and be ready if they needed him.

Steuck, who participated in the NFL’s team rookie minicamp in early May, was signed by the Packers over the weekend after Green Bay long snapper Jesse Schmitt was placed on injured reserve because of a broken hand, according to an Associated Press report. “You go and watch practices as a kid and ask for someone to grab your bike, and then today I was the one doing that. It was a dream come true”. He was a student teacher at Ashwaubenon High School last year and was scheduled to be a teaching aide in the West De Pere school district during this upcoming year. This time, he was awarded a contract. When he’s on the field, he just seems to be a magnet for making plays.

There wasn’t much time to celebrate, though he did enjoy his reality check – courtesy of veteran defensive tackle Letroy Guion. In addition to starter Corey Linsley, who remains on the PUP list because of a hamstring injury, Matt Rotheram (biceps) and Jacob Flores (knee) also have dropped out of practice. The second-year player had been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury in practice August 1. Rookie guard Lucas Patrick has been playing with one hand, with the other in a club-cast. He failed to take advantage of all the reps he took with Nelson and Montgomery out all offseason and into the start of training camp.

In light of all of that, it’d be nice if Steuck could contribute on Thursday night vs. Mortell said watching Steuck talk to reporters.

Either way, Steuck will fulfill a lifelong dream vs. the Raiders when he runs out of the Lambeau Field tunnel. “You know for a fact that the guys that do make the team are going to be really good guys, going to be some playmakers”. “I mean you dream about going through that tunnel”.
