Packers win without the stars

Packers: Third-year WR Jeff Janis was held out with a hand injury, adding to a notable list that included Matthews (ankle) and Cobb (calf).

Mike McCarthy hasn’t shown his cards about Rodgers’ status, but based on observers the QB is spending little time practicing with starters this week – which serves as an indication that Rodgers plans to sit Thursday when the team takes on Oakland.

Mason Crosby made two 54-yard field goals, and undrafted rookie Joe Callahan threw a touchdown pass as the fill-in for Rodgers. He hadn’t played in a game since last preseason and walked away healthy despite taking a few hits.

“I think we need to get those five guys playing together”, he said, pointing to the fact that Greco and Erving have missed time because of injuries.

“We’ve had some extra practice with the Hall of Fame Game, even though we didn’t play it”, Clements said Wednesday.

The Dolphins had safety Shamiel Gary (neck), defensive end Julius Warmsley (concussion) and receiver Jakeem Grant (ribs) get nicked. “You’ve got to be able to adjust to the position change quick and be a very quick learner”.

“He’s challenging him that’s for sure”, Jackson said, “(but) I’m not going to say he’s ahead”.

Taken in the third round of the draft, Montgomery played only the first six games last season before he sustained what turned out to be a severe ankle injury in a win over the Chargers on October 18.

Callahan, last year’s top college player in Division III, was denied an opportunity to start opposite the Colts’ Andrew Luck last week.

Head coach Hue Jackson confirmed the news earlier this afternoon. For the Packers, the opener didn’t feature either of projected first and second string quarterbacks.

Sixth-year Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton started and completed his first four passes for 32 yards.

The Cleveland Browns’ second round draft pick also reportedly said that he needs to get better conditioning before the regular season starts. “The only way to do that is if you played every snap of every preseason game and that’s not gonna happen”, said Aaron Rodgers. S Morgan Burnett didn’t practice Sunday because of a back injury. He was helping coach the football team at his alma mater, West De Pere High School, before the Packers worked him out Saturday.
