Packers WR Jordy Nelson to start camp on PUP list

Packers coach Mike McCarthy marveled Monday at Rodgers’ condition after the quarterback changed to a vegan-like diet – no dairy, very little meat – following knee surgery in January.

Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy watches as players participate in drills during NFL football training camp, Tuesday, July 26, 2016, in Green Bay, Wis.

The first practice is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, and McCarthy says getting ready for the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on August 7 against the Indianapolis presents a different challenge for his men.

All of that is why McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson might have to consider keeping seven receivers on the roster this year.

Lacy might end up losing some weight during training camp, though I can’t say I noticed any difference in him from the start to finish of camp previous year. It could be one of the team’s best leadership cores yet, McCarthy said.

A series of high-profile activities spotlighting the players and other fan engagement opportunities will coincide with the beginning of the regular season. Nelson is coming back from a torn right ACL injury that kept him out for the 2015 season. While he did some individual drills during the offseason practices, he was not allowed to participate in any 11-on-11 work. His presence (plus some better play-calling) could help Rodgers get back on track.

“You’re talking about two players that have, shoot, thousands of reps invested in their time together”.

“I’m confident that he’ll get to a point where he’ll be ready to play when we need him”.

And it should because Eddie Lacy is running through the cracks between his offensive linemen and not into their backs.

If you want to see a Packers player who changed his body significantly this off-season, take a look at tight end Richard Rodgers.

In his career, Nelson had gone over 1,000 yards receiving in a season three times, and prior to his injury in 2015, had played in 16 games in both 2013 and 2014. McCarthy expects Rodgers to bounce back in a big way.
