Padres continue rebuilding by trading Upton to Blue Jays
Padres pitcher Andrew Cashner did his best to push aside distracting trade talk and turn in a solid start.

San Diego extended its club-record streak of games with at least one home run to 25. The plucky little Toronto Blue Jays second baseman was standing at the plate with two on, one out, and a full count in the bottom of the 12th inning against San Diego Padres reliever Carlos Villanueva, fouling off pitch after pitch, each one raising the tension a notch higher than the last.
Padres rookie Luis Perdomo (5-4) allowed four runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings to win back-to-back starts.
Dickey walked four and gave up four hits, including a two-run homer to Adam Rosales in the top of the third inning and a solo homer to Brett Wallace in the top of the fifth. It’s the longest run since the 2002 Texas Rangers set a major league record by homering in 27 straight.
“I think it’s only human that you question some of the methods or the selection, but at the end of the day if I’ve learned anything through my experience as a baseball player it’s that you kind of have to have blinders on and trust the pedigree”, Dickey said. “I’ve made some great relationships with a lot of guys and there’ll be lasting friendships for a lifetime”. A Jose Bautista walk drove in Toronto’s first run of the inning, while Josh Donaldson grounded into a fielder’s choice to tie the game again. “He put it all aside, stepped up and pitched a big game”.
“I still have a third of my season left so there’s reason for optimism and I’m going to roll with that”. Travis fouled off eight straight pitches, including one drive that sailed just wide of the left-field foul screen. Like all lineup proposals, it is subject to change but the Blue Jays did acquire Upton to play him. A curveball bounced and got away from Padres catcher Derek Norris, and Travis scooted home to score the winning run, diving head first for the plate.
“I thought the outing was very good”, Gibbons said. “I was praying for in the dirt”.
“It would likely take an injury for him to turn into an everyday outfielder with us”, Atkins said.
It was the second key run to score on a wild pitch: Toronto catcher Russell Martin made it 4-all when he scored on Brad Hand’s wild pitch in the seventh.
“It is a frustrating loss, especially how hard the guys battled back on a couple of occasions”, Green said.
RHP Joaquin Benoit was obtained Tuesday night in a trade with the Mariners, who receive RHP Drew Storen and cash. Benoit, 39, is 1-1 with a 5.18 ERA in 26 appearances this season.
Padres: Class-A RHP Chris Paddack, acquired from Miami in last month’s trade for Fernando Rodney, has been sidelined indefinitely with a strained forearm.

Before the game, Gibbons said he plans to start Upton in Wednesday’s series-ending matinee game, allowing Bautista to serve as the designated hitter. Marco Estrada, the schedule starter on Wednesday, going Friday in the opener against the Orioles. To go up in that atmosphere, in that moment, and to be able to grind out an AB like that, and then nearly hit a homer and come back and take the next pitch, that shows you the composure that Devon has.
