But Green, 38, was appointed on Thursday in a surprise move by the Padres.
The Padres named Arizona Diamondbacks third base coach Andy Green as their manager Thursday, replacing Pat Murphy, who held the job on an interim basis before being let go at the end of the regular season.
San Diego finished the season with a 74-88 record and came in fourth place in the National League West. Green was one of the peripheral candidates during the interview process, although he was one of the first the Padres expressed interest with.
Stay tuned for an official announcement. Murphy took over after Bud Black was sacked in mid-June.
AJ Pollock of the Arizona Diamondbacks is congratulated by third base coach Andy Green on July 23, 2015 in Phoenix, Arizona. 200 with two home runs and 12 RBI. He batted. 200 in 230 career at-bats. He played parts of four seasons with the D-backs (2004-06) and Mets (2009), hitting.
Green inherits a roster that figures to see a few turnover after a woefully disappointing season, though not almost as much as when Preller overhauled the club last winter.
Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos is leaving the team, rejecting a five-year contract extension to remain.
