Padres starter Paul Clemens left Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds in the fifth inning because of tightness in his lower back. Two of the six runners who reached base against Friedrich were eliminated on double plays.DeSclafani, who blanked the Padres on five hits over eight innings on June 26 in Cincinnati, allowed four hits and two walks. This will be Clemens’ first career game against the Reds.
Here’s hoping Matt Kemp can continue to hit (.314 with seven dingers in the second half) and the lineup can find offense even with the injury to Alex Dickerson, who had a 4 game HR streak ended by an unfortunate collision with Travis Jankowski last night. After he left the Padres used four relievers to throw four ideal innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jabari Blash was at the plate with a full count and Homer Bailey on the mound. Bailey’s wildness temporarily worked in the pitcher’s favor. With Ryan Schimpf at the plate, Amarista and Myers moved to third and second, respectively, on a double steal.
“Christian is fine when he hits his spots”, said Padres manager Andy Green. Just as quickly, however, Bailey gave away a run.
“That caught me off guard”, Rosales said.
Blake Wood relieved Bailey and retired Bethancourt looking to end the threat.

Padres: RHP Erik Johnson (right elbow) is expected to miss the rest of the season. Green said SS Jose Rondon, who was promoted from Double-A San Antonio when 3B Yangervis Solarte left the team last Wednesday on family leave, will play the majority games at short “as long as he’s up here with us”.
