Padres trade Shields, cash to White Sox for Johnson, Tatis

The San Diego Padres are on the verge of trading starter James Shields, with the Chicago White Sox the likeliest destination for the right-hander.

Shields, 34, is now in the middle of a four-year, $75 million deal he signed with the Padres in 2015.

Shields is earning $21 million this year.

The 26-year-old pitcher was the International League’s Most Valuable Pitcher last season after leading the IL in ERA (2.37) and strikeouts (136).

There is a pitched existential battle going on among White Sox fans about the James Shields trade, with one side thinking it’s a bad move and the other side thinking we can put a man on the moon but we can’t figure out a way to keep a beer cold. The 17-year-old Tatis is the son of former big leaguer Fernando Tatis.

Shields had signed a four-year, $75 million deal signed with the Padres in February 2015.

Chicago also received cash considerations in the trade. He allowed 10 runs in 2 2-3 innings in a 16-4 loss at Seattle on Tuesday. Nightengale reports the Padres plan to pay off around half of the remaining money left on his contract. I think his only regret was that he wasn’t able to turn us into a victor.

Getty Images Cashner missed time in May with a hamstring issue, and he’s had an unimpressive season otherwise thus far (4.79 ERA over 47 innings).

“There are other areas of need on this roster potentially over the coming months, and while the rotation was certainly a very important one – and frankly one we felt was going to be fairly hard to address in the coming weeks leading up to the trade deadline given the supply and demand out there – we felt it was an important one to move on early”, Hahn said. While Shields is more of a mid-rotation guy than a top-end arm, he should be more productive that Mat Latos or Miguel Gonzalez.

Now, the trade in which they’ve cut bait on expensive starting pitcher James Shields could serve as a blueprint for the Twins. The White Sox will have him for this season and 2017 and 2018 with a team option for 2019.

A 2015 International League All-Star past year, Johnson was selected to start the Triple-A All-Star Game, which took place on July 15 in Omaha, NE. Yet he’s the only pitcher in the major leagues who has pitched at least 200 innings the last two seasons, stretching to nine his streak of 200 innings-plus seasons.

The Twins have three expensive starting pitchers who haven’t yet lived up to their contract: Ricky Nolasco, Phil Hughes and Ervin Santana.
