Pakistan’s army chief has held talks in Kabul with top Afghan officials as part of new efforts to revive talks between the Afghan government and the extremist Taliban militia group.

The daily quoted former Afghan army chief General (retired) Sher Muhammad Karimi, as saying that he was looking at General Sharif’s visit with a lot of optimism.
General Raheel Sharif will meet Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and other civil as well as military leaders during day-long trip.
“COAS will visit Kabul on Sunday, 27th Dec. During his day long visit, Will hold meetings with Political and military leadership of Afghanistan”, Pakistan’s Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.
Afghan Defense Ministry said on Saturday that Army found and defused three landmines near the capital city of Kabul.
He will meet political and military leadership in the country. But the talks stalled when the Taliban belatedly confirmed the death of longtime leader Mullah Omar, sparking a power struggle within the movement. “The main focus of the visit is the peace process in Afghan Taliban and government and mutual border security issues”, media reported.
Ahead of the army chief’s visit to Kabul, Afghan President Ghani also telephoned Prime Minister Nawaz on Friday.

He added that “the discussions were fruitful” but gave no further details on the talks.
