Pak recall Umar Akmal for ODI series against Windies

Asad Shafiq and Umar Akmal are set to play their first one-day internationals this year after both were named in Pakistan’s ODI squad for their series against the West Indies.

Akmal, 26, was sidelined for 18 months over disciplinary problems and played the last of his 111 ODIs in March during the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. He was recalled to the Twenty20 worldwide squad earlier this month after being ignored for five months.

Under-fire captain Azhar Ali has been retained as skipper, despite coming under pressure following their 4-1 series defeat to England earlier this month.

However, pacers Umar Gul and Mohammad Irfan have not received a nod for the series against the Caribbean side.

Pakistan lost their last one-day series in England 4-1 and are now ninth in the one-day rankings.

Pakistan will play three ODIs against the West Indies on Sept 30 and Oct 2 in Sharjah, and Oct 5 in Abu Dhabi.

There were also ODI recalls for batsman Asad Shafiq and pacemen Sohail Khan and Rahat Ali.

In its press release, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) stated that Chief Selector Inzamam ul Haq – in consultation with the National Selection Committee – has finalized the 16 member ODI Team for the three ODIs against West Indies in UAE.
