Pakistan condemns terror attack in Pathankot Air Force base
Four gunmen and two guards were killed when unidentified militants attacked an Indian Air Force base near the Pakistan border on Saturday in an apparent challenge to attempts to revive a dialogue between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

The official added that security forces had so far prevented the “heavily armed” attackers from inflicting major damage at the base.
“We want peace, but if there is any terrorist attack on India we will give a befitting reply”.
Department dealing with the foreign affairs stated that Pakistan is willing to collaborate with India for a common cause of weeding-out extremism.
“Our security personnel were alert, but the surprise element lies with the attackers and who knows when and where they will strike”, he said.
The Ministry of External Affairs has said that the immediate focus is on resolving the situation in Pathankot as the operations continue.
At least one helicopter could be seen later in the day firing at an area inside the Pathankot air force base.
Jaish-e-Mohammed, which is banned in Pakistan, fights against Indian rule in the divided Himalayan region of Kashmir, where a separatist conflict has claimed up to 100,000 lives. “The long-term planning was always there but the ultimate decision to expedite it would have been taken after the visit”.
The terrorists, who struck just a week after Modi’s unscheduled visit to Lahore, could not, however, penetrate defence cordon at the Air base which is located close to the border with Pakistan as they met with effective response from the security forces, police and security officials said. Rebels routinely stage attacks in Indian-held Kashmir, where they’ve been fighting since 1989 for an independent Kashmir or its merger with Pakistan.

In July, three gunmen dressed in army uniforms opened fire on a bus and then attacked a police station in the nearby Gurdaspur district of Punjab, killing seven people including four policemen.
