Pakistan confirms surprise visit by Indian PM
“Spoke to PM Nawaz Sharif & wished him on his birthday”, Modi added in another tweet. He had also wished Nawaz on his birthday in a telephonic conversation.

“So, you have finally come”, Mr Sharif told Mr Modi as he arrived, according to a Pakistani foreign ministry official at the meeting. Modi reached Kabul early on Friday after a two-day visit to Russian Federation.
Sharif, flanked by his cabinet ministers, received Modi on the tarmac where military officers lined up along a red carpet. The two leaders then, in a first, flew together in a helicopter to Mr. Sharif’s ancestral home at Raiwind and spent more than an hour talking to each other over tea.
During his 150-minute visit to Lahore, PM Modi held talks with Nawaz Sharif at the Pak PM’s residence.
The two countries have tried to minimize tensions since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which India says were orchestrated in Pakistan.
According to media reports, Nawaz Sharif was present at the Lahore airport when PM Narendra Modi’s flight was taking off from here.
At the same time, Modi said Pakistan must act like a bridge between South Asia and Afghanistan.
A spokesman at Sharif’s office earlier told Reuters the two leaders were to discuss a range of bilateral issues, including the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, the most contentious issue dividing the nuclear-armed rivals. It’s the first trip to the country by an Indian head of state in a decade – and could be a sign of improving relations between the two neighbors.
“That’s like a statesman”.
“I was preset in Lahore thereby I attended the meeting”, he said.
Modi and Sharif had fleetingly met at the Paris Climate Summit on November 30, preparing the atmosphere for a resumption of the stalled bilateral dialogue.
Prime Minister Modi also reiterated India’s full support to Afghanistan for strengthening its defensive capabilities for preserving its unity and territorial integrity and ensuring security, and strongly supported Afghan government-led reconciliation process, which respects the red lines drawn by the people of Afghanistan and the worldwide community.
A meeting between foreign affairs secretaries of both countries is due in January. “But today, let us at least resolve to help Afghanistan – in the best traditions of good neighbourliness – through more effective transit arrangements”, she said. Today is, incidentally, also Mr. Vajpayee’s 91st birthday. “Both leaders also underscored the need to understand the issues, concerns and desires of each other”.
The visit did not sit well with India’s opposition Congress Party, which argued that the Pakistan had not taken any steps to warrant such a visit by Modi.
But earlier this month, they agreed to resume high-level talks that would cover peace and security as well as territorial disputes, including over Kashmir.

Chaudhry added that the Indian Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyan Jaishankar will be visiting Islamabad next month to continue the dialogue.
