Pakistan fined for slow over rate

Leg-spinner Shah had rocked England with three for 15 late on Saturday following Younis Khan’s commanding 218 in Pakistan’s first innings 542.

Pakistan won the final Test against England at The Oval to square the series 2-2.

Bayliss said: “I think I heard Cookie say the two or three guys we’ve got in the team have been very good players over the last two or three years, experienced players at county level, and they have found it tough to jump up to this level”.

Man-of-the-Match Younis added: “As a senior player I always want to contribute. That’s why it [the double century] was on the right time”. It means that, should Sri Lanka defeat Australia by a margin of 2-0 (or better) and West Indies draw the Port of Spain Test, Pakistan would claim the No.1 spot for the first time since the official rankings were introduced in 2003.

“We played at a disappointing level – we’ve drawn a series so it’s not the end of the world, but we had the opportunity to beat Pakistan and it’s frustrating. We are a good side when we are on it but there are a few areas we need to improve to make that next step”.

But England are so dependent on Alastair Cook and Joe Root making runs. Bairstow then drove Wahab to extra cover as the hosts, still four behind, lost their eighth wicket.

Moeen Ali, coming off the back of a brilliant first-innings hundred, immediately got off the mark with a flicked four off the pads and he too resolved to remain as fluent as possible as England sought to chip away at their deficit.

Azhar launched a huge six to secure victory for Pakistan, leaving England to rue a disappointing display – compounded by a potential hamstring injury to Finn.

136 runs by Jonny Bairstow is the most by an England wicketkeeper in a Test against Pakistan.

Pakistan chased it down in 13.1 overs, with all 10 wickets in hand.

Before then, England will announce a squad on Tuesday morning for five ODIs against Pakistan, starting next week. The pair of Michael Clarke-Brad Haddin in 2008 and Asad Shafiq-Sarfraz Ahmed in 2014 also had five fifty-plus stands.

Yasir’s success in this match, not to mention his 10 wickets at Lord’s, has shown up the limitations of Moeen Ali as a bowler, series haul of 11 wickets overshadowed Yasir’s 19.

While they were winning series as they did against South Africa in the winter and Sri Lanka earlier this summer, the top six was a problem that could be put on the back burner.
