Pakistan, OIC for effective counter-narrative against extremism, terrorism

Balochistan August 19Three days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi invoked the struggles of Baloch nationalists in Pakistan, in his Independence Day speech, a student leader from the turbulent neighboring region took the occasion of Raksha Bandhan to express her gratitude.

Yesterday, India set certain conditions for talks, asserting that discussions should focus on cessation of terrorist activities in J&K and ending incitement to violence and terror in the Valley. From 1999 onwards, when the Lahore declaration was signed between Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif, the invoking of the UN Security Council resolutions has been used sparingly, that too in rhetoric.

He appealed to the Centre to put an immediate end to the “bloodshed and atrocities” and said “whatever is happening in Kashmir is badly impacting the image of India and question marks are being put on the Indian claims of democracy”. It ” s a complicated issue”, he said.

“We want the Centre to take emergent steps to check excessive use of force”. At least 67 people have been killed and over 4,000 injured in clashes with security forces since then.

He said the global community and human rights organizations should call upon India to stop use of brute force in Occupied Kashmir.

Traditionally, India has raised the issues of Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan that formed part of the undivided state of Jammu & Kashmir, before the Indo-Pak war of 1947-48 that cleaved the state into two halves.

Jaishankar’s visit would provide India a chance to press on Pakistan to bring all those guilty in the Mumbai attacks of 2008 and the Pathankot attacks to justice, it said.

“On this, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah ordered his commander-in-chief to respond by sending troops but he refused (to obey his orders)”. He said India’s objection to such a beneficial economic project was beyond comprehension.

Zakaria said Pakistan had invited finance ministers of SAARC countries for the next week meeting but so far was waiting for confirmation on Arun Jaitley’s participation.
