Pakistan re-elected to Executive Board UNESCO

Since 2013, Pakistan has won 21 elections out of 22 that it contested.

The centers in the fields of UNESCO’s competence – such as education, science, culture and information – are established in the mission of regional and worldwide research and specialized training within the policies and strategies of UNESCO. The resolution initially included language that designated the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem as part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, but the clause was later dropped.

Ambassador Le Hong Phan, head of the Vietnamese Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, believed that Vietnam’s presence in the Executive Board will further strengthen ties between Vietnam and UNESCO, and between Vietnam and member states.

The country obtained 156 out of 186 votes at the on-going 38th session of the UNESCO General Conference that opened in Paris on November 3.

He also pledged to work to restore USA funding to UNESCO, halted in 2011 after the agency voted to include Palestine as a member. USA law bars the government from giving money to global organizations that recognize Palestinian statehood.

Secretary of State John Kerry, who recently traveled to Paris to woo UNESCO diplomats, hailed Wednesday’s decision.

Pakistan on Thursday was re-elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), reports said.

Other countries occupying seats in Electoral Group IV alongside Iran are Malaysia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, the Republic of Korea, and Pakistan.
