Pakistan releases 163 Indian fishermen

In a gesture of goodwill, Pakistani prison authorities on Sunday released 163 Indian nationals imprisoned at the Landhi jail in Karachi. The fishermen, who had been kept in a Karachi jail for nine months to a year, were put on a train bound for Lahore from where they will cross back to their home country. “We have (today) released 163 fishermen as a goodwill gesture”, Dawn quoted jail superintendent Muhammad Hassan Sehto as saying.

Those released include five children aged between 10 and 14.

Pakistan and India routinely catch fishermen who cross water boundaries for illegal fishing.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan High Commission has approached the External Affairs Ministry seeking details and the factual position of the reports about alleged Pakistani woman in the custody of the Indian authorities in Amritsar.

There has also been a flare-up in violence along the de facto border in Kashmir in recent weeks. It was also decided between the two leaders of the neighbouring countries that they will restart peace talks previously suspended.
