The list of people to replace her includes Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom, who enjoys the unanimous backing of the African Union and is bidding to be the first African to hold the position.

The candidates’ profiles were submitted by the governments of Ethiopia, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Pakistan and Hungary.
The director-general is the de facto head of the WHO, overseeing all technical and administrative tasks for the organization. During that time, WHO’s 194 Member States could propose candidates for the post of Director-General, the Organization’s chief technical and administrative officer who oversees WHO’s worldwide health work. Current WHO Director-General Margaret Chan is due to complete her term June 30, 2017, after almost 11 years in office.
She will step down on June 30, 2017, making way for the new director general to take over.
Six candidates are in the running to take over the helm of the World Health Organization, including the Ethiopian foreign minister who is bidding to be the first African to hold the position, the United Nations agency said Friday. Executive Board members will then interview these candidates and nominate up to 3 to go forward for consideration by the World Health Assembly in May 2017, when Member States will vote in a new Director-General. Nabarro is now a special adviser to the United Nations on sustainable development, and Bustreo is an assistant director-general at the WHO.
WHO said a shortlist of three would be presented in May at the agency’s annual World Health Assembly, which will make the final appointment.
