Pakistan sentences 5 to death over attack on Shiites

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan-Five men were sentenced to death by a Pakistan military court in connection with a deadly attack on a bus carrying members of the country’s minority Shiite population, the military said Thursday.

Those whose death sentences were confirmed are: Saad Aziz alias Tin Tin, tried on nine charges; Tahir Hussain Minhas alias Sain, tried on 10 charges; Asad-ur-Rehman alias Malik, tried on four charges; Hafiz Nasir alias Yasir, tried on four charges and Azhar Ishrat alias Majid, tried on five charges.

Gunmen had stormed a bus travelling in Safoora Goth area of Karachi on May 13, 2015, killing at least 46 people, a lot of them were of Ismaili community.

They were also involved in attacks on Saleh Masjid, Karachi, killing a social worker, Sabeen, and law-enforcement agencies.

This was said by an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement on Thursday.

It was also mentioned in the statement that these convicts were tried in the military courts and not the civil courts.

The attack was claimed by the dreaded terror outfit ISIS, their first strike in the region.

After nearly a year of Sabeen Mahmud’s murder, her attacker, Saad Aziz has been awarded the death sentence for his crimes.

The army courts were set up after the terrorist attack on an army school in December 2014 for the speedy trial of the terrorism-related accused.
