Pakistan suspends talks with India, says no to NIA

Speaking at a press conference, Abdul Basit said that, ” There shouldn’t be any doubt that Pak wants to have a normal & peaceful relationship with India ” .

He said all such forces were bound to fail as the people of Pakistan were united to effectively counter anti-Pakistan subversive activities.

The modalities of holding the dialogue, including a section on tackling terrorism, was to be discussed by the foreign secretaries of the two countries in January this year. The team was denied the opportunity to collect evidence from the site of the attack, it said, adding that no major damage was done to the base and that the Indian authorities showed the JIT the place from where the gunmen had entered.

This official comment came a day after a Pakistani news report quoted unnamed sources as saying that India had staged the attack to malign Pakistan.

The 2 January attack was carried out by Jaish-e-Mohamed terrorists from Pakistan, in which seven Indian security force personnel were killed.

Pointing out that the Pakistan probe team was allowed to examine all witnesses, sources had said that the sudden denial from Pakistan side was nothing but pressure from terror groups. Therefore, a fair and just resolution is a must and attempts to put it on backburner from our perspective will be counterproductive ” . “Therefore, the fair and just resolution, as per aspirations of people of Jammu & Kashmir, is imperative”. “I subscribe to Chinese viewpoint”, said Basit. On the status of arrested former Indian Navy officer by Pakistan, he said India has sought consular access and same was awaited.

Finally about the peace talks, Basit struck a pretty pessimistic tone saying, ” Let’s see if we are able to commence the dialogue process ” . He also said that Pakistani government knows about elements causing unrest in the country and also know about those behind such elements.
