He’s shown that he’s had the guts in this innings (the second ODI) to turn it around and play so well.

Hafeez now has four half-centuries and two hundreds in his last 12 ODIs.

Morgan and Taylor responded impressively to build a most promising platform, from unlikely beginnings, reaching 145 for three at the start of what would however be a hapless 31st over for England. Malik, after scoring 10 runs, completed 6,000 one-day runs in his 229th match.

Younis was recalled to the ODI side following his supreme form in the country’s Test series win over England, averaging 50.33 across the three games and surpassing Javed Miandad as Pakistan’s highest Test run getter.

The 2010 ICC World Twenty20-winning captain said: “Ultimately, we have a long-term goal – to win the World Cup”.

He said: “They’re a young group who want to go out and give it their best, and it’s fantastic there’s no ceiling to them… the way they can flourish, and the environment”.

“He will retire from one-day cricket after Wednesday’s game and he has conveyed this to us”, team manager Intikhab Alam told AFP.

Skipper Eoin Morgan scored 76 runs upon his return to competitive cricket after two months while James Taylor made 60.

“We understand there’s a lot of development to go on… and a lot of learning to do”.

Root too departed for a duck, lbw to Anwar Ali (2-32), who added the wicket of Hales, caught at slip by Younus, reducing England to 14-3.

Like the Test series, Pakistani spinners continue to dominate the England’s batsmen in the ODIs as well and picked up their three crucial wickets which eventually restricted the visiting side to put a hard target on the board in the first game in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

When Jason Roy (54 off 57 balls) set an exhilarating pace in an opening stand with Hales of 102 in 17 overs, England were on course for 300-plus. Jos Buttler was run out for just one as he continued his run of low scores, as did Moeen Ali when he was dismissed by Yasir Shah for seven.

Chris Woakes (33 not out) and David Willey (13) added an invaluable 33 for the ninth wicket to get England past 200-mark before Irfan returned to take his third wicket in the penultimate over.

Anwar and Malik grabbed two wickets apiece.

Reece Topley, in just his second ODI, was alone as an individual success in a match which saw a series of costly lapses with bat and then – to a lesser degree – ball.

Paul Farbace expects England's ODI side to get back to winning ways saying'It's not about developing- it's about winning
