President PFUJ and Secretary General Amin Yousuf have condemned this brutal killing of Zaman Mehsud and demanded the government to take prompt action to arrest the culprits.
Taliban commander Qari Saifullah Saif told Reuters: “We killed him because he was writing against us”.
The journalist’s brother Muhammed Aslam wept as he collected the body.
“Our initial information is that Zaman was killed by a man who was riding on a bike near an army check post”, Salam said.
More than 70 journalists and media workers have lost their lives since 2001 while pursuing their duties in Pakistan – 47 of whom were deliberately targeted and murdered for practicing their profession.
Journalist Zaman Mehsud was riddled with bullets by unidentified gunmen while on the way to his village in the northwestern Tank district. All but one were Pakistanis.
Just a day before, media workers in Pakistan as well as around the globe observed the “International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists”. The slain journo was heading to Tank from Gomal Bazaar when he came under attack.
In the past decade, over 700 journalists have been killed around the world merely for doing their job.
