Station House Officer (SHO) of Sharifabad police station on Thursday night registered a First Information Report (FIR) on behalf of Azmat Farid Sabri, against unidentified attackers of slain qawwal Amjad Sabri.

Sabri was a “Qawwal”, or singer of “Qawwali”, which is a traditional form of Islamic devotional music that is popular across South Asia with roots tracing back to the 13th century. “She was a passerby who sustained minor injuries on her shoulder”, said the police official.

Since Mr Sabri’s killing, grief and anger have gripped Pakistan with TV channels and the print media highlighting the state of lawlessness in the country’s largest city Karachi.

“Two attackers riding a motorcycle intercepted his vehicle and targeted Amjad Sabri, who was driving”, Sindh police chief Allah Dino Khawaja told reporters soon after the incident. He was shifted to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to police, Sabri was the only target of the killers who spared another person travelling with the singer. He vows to obliterate every single culprit behind the death of Sabri.

The Sabri family rose to fame in the 1970s, when the dynamic duo of Ghulam Farid Sabri and Maqbool Ahmed Sabri redefined the old genre of qawwali singing.

Amjad Sabri was keeping the family tradition alive and was one of the most sought-after Qawwals of the country.

Some of the most famous works of the Sabri Brothers include “Tajdar-e-Haram” and “Bhar Do Jholi”, both of which were performed by Amjad for modern audiences.
