On Monday, Israeli forces killed two Palestinians in the West Bank while two Israeli police officers were stabbed near the Old City of Jerusalem.

The Israeli defence ministry said she had approached the crossing by foot while carrying a bag.

Palestinian police said she was shot when she tried to run away.

The child was shot at a roadblock near the illegal Israeli settlement of Alfei Menashe, near Qalqilia in the northern part of the West Bank. “When the girl continued to walk and put her hand under her shirt, the security guards fired at her leg to stop her”, the statement read.

The incident comes as a new surge of Palestinian violence against Israeli security forces and civilians began last week following a period of relative calm in a wave of violence that began at the start of Rosh Hashanah previous year. “While I share my colleagues’ aim to stand with Israel”, he said, “I am concerned that the United Nations treats Israelis and Palestinians as equivalent partners-there is simply no comparison”.

After months of relative calm, the previous several days saw several attacks or attempted attacks by Palestinians against Israelis. Tuesday’s incident was the ninth since Friday, coming after Palestinians wrapped up the Muslim celebration of Id ul-Zuha and as Israel tightened security ahead of major Jewish holidays in October.

The assailant in that case was shot and seriously wounded. According to Israeli authorities, the men were killed while attacking Israelis, suggesting the return of the nearly daily Palestinian attacks seen previously over the past year.

Earlier this month, the trio rejected an Israeli Supreme Court decision to “temporarily” suspend their administrative detention, vowing to continue their hunger strikes until the administrative detention orders issued against them were permanently overturned.

Palestinians have killed least 33 Israelis and two visiting Americans in the attacks, Reuters reported.

Since Friday, Israeli security forces have reported at least nine knifing and vehicle ramming attacks on targets in the West Bank and Jerusalem. The Obama administration, meanwhile, has been dismayed by periodic comments by the Israeli leader suggesting he’s less-than-serious about the two-state solution that has been the basis of all serious peace efforts for decades.

Israel has blamed the violence on incitement by Palestinian political and religious leaders compounded on social media sites. Ultimately, it is the Israelis and the Palestinians who must live side by side.
