Near Hebron, a large West Bank city where anti-Israel hostility is strong, a Palestinian motorist tried to ram troops who then shot him dead, the army spokesman’s office said.

The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the victim as 22-year-old Oday Ersheid, whose brother had also been killed at the hands of Israelis during similar clashes in October.

Palestinians said a 22-year-old local man was fatally shot in the chest.

Al-Qedra said that 68 Palestinians were wounded by the Israeli fire, 58 of them were injured by live ammunition while 10 suffered suffocation.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the man as Issa Hroub, 55, from the nearby village of Deir Samet.

The health ministry said that the Palestinian death toll climbed to 121 since the outbreak of the current wave of violent tension between Israel and the Palestinians in the Palestinian territories early October. The Shin Bet intelligence agency said that he confessed to carrying out the assault and Salam is a part of Hamas from the West Bank village of Luban. “An armed Palestinian assailant fired shots on the Gilboa crossing from several dozen metres (yards) away”, said a statement from the ministry, which employs civilian guards at the site.

The bloodshed has also been fueled by Muslim agitation over stepped-up Israeli access to Jerusalem’s al Aqsa mosque complex, which many Jews revere as a vestige of their biblical temples.

Israel has withheld the bodies of many attackers, a policy authorities say acts as a deterrent but that critics argue leads to more anger. His sister had been killed the previous month after pulling knife on an Israeli soldier.

After yesterday’s protest, clashes broke out between Palestinian stone throwers and Israeli soldiers, with six Palestinians wounded, an AFP correspondent said.
