Palestinian mob burns sacred tomb of Joseph

It’s understood two were killed by live fire & 126 wounded during the violence on the Israel-Gaza border.

Police spokeswoman Louba Samri said the Palestinian, who was not immediately identified, was killed on the spot after he tried to stab the soldier in the Israeli settlement neighbourhood of Armon Hanetsiv, also known as East Talpiot.

The worst outbreak in bloodshed in months has killed at least 37 Palestinians, including attackers and children in assaults and confrontations, and seven Israelis in stabbings and other attacks on buses and in the streets.

Tensions began rising again in September after Jews and Muslims clashed over alleged plans by Israel to increase Jewish rights at another holy site in Jerusalem. Israel has repeatedly denied such claims.

He said Israeli security forces must withdraw from “contact points” with the Palestinians, in particular in east Jerusalem.

The site is located in an area under Palestinian self-rule and visits by Jews are coordinated between Palestinian security forces and Israeli troops.

Mutez Awaysat, 16, was killed by Israeli soldiers in Jerusalem, WAFA reported, citing eyewitnesses. The Palestinian teen is recovering in an Israeli hospital.

What’s behind the latest unrest?

“Abbas called the arson attack on the flashpoint Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus irresponsible and said a committee was being formed to investigate”, AFP reports. He added the incident showed the Palestinians could not be trusted to control religious holy sites.

Violence continued Saturday, with Israeli police reporting new stabbing attempts or attacks in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

There have been two organised uprisings by Palestinians against Israeli occupation, in the 1980s and early 2000s.

The Foreign Press Association for Israel and the Palestinian territories and the committee to protect journalists firmly condemned the attack – calling on Palestinian media organisations to verify press credentials “to ensure there are no violations”.
