Palestinian prisoner ends record hunger strike

Israel’s controversial administrative detention law allows the state to hold suspects without trial for periods of six months renewable indefinitely. The Israeli rights group B’tselem says there were 584 Palestinians held under the procedure at the end of 2015.

The commission revealed that Al Qiq suspended the hunger strike after agreeing for release on May 21, and to continue his treatment in Israeli hospitals.

“Mohammed al-Qeeq ended his hunger strike after an agreement was reached to release him from custody on May 21”, Issa Qraqe, head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)’s detainees committee, said. “On that date, the situation will be examined to determine whether there is new information or security circumstances which require extending detention”.

Demolitions of Palestinian houses occur under the pretext that the homes were constructed without permits, this also happens to homes constructed in pre-1967 al-Quds (Jerusalem) i.e. before Israel’s takeover of the city. Israel says he has been involved in militant activities linked to Hamas.

His comments come following a string of incidents in the past month – including the shooting by Israeli forces of a 14-year old Palestinian girl who attempted to stab a border guard in Hebron and the killing of two Palestinian teenagers shot by Israeli forces in the West Bank, purportedly for throwing rocks at their vehicles. Fearing that a fasting detainee’s death could spark more violence, Israel has at times acceded to hunger strikers’ demands.

According to the latest Palestinian figures, since October 1 of previous year, at least 186 Palestinians have been killed and another 15,645 injured by Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip and in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. Police said an initial investigation indicates it was “most likely” a Palestinian assailant who carried out the attack and then fled the scene.
