Palestinian shot dead after allegedly stabbing soldier at Nablus checkpoint

Israeli forces on Thursday shot and killed a Palestinian at the Zaatara (Tappuah) military checkpoint south of Nablus after he reportedly attempted to stab an Israeli soldier, Israeli police said.

According to the IDF, the soldiers were in moderate condition.

It’s the latest attack in a two-month wave of violence.

“Netanyahu has not only refused to talk about halting illegal settlement construction but – on the contrary – recently announced plans to build 3150 new settlements units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem while reiterating his rejection of a two-state solution” Erekat said. Emergency response workers transported the other soldier to Hadassah University Medical Center in the capital’s Ein Kerem. The army said the soldier was critically hurt and a an official at Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem said the Palestinian assailant died on the operating table.

The violence has also left 17 Israelis, an American and an Eritrean dead.

He went on to warn Israel against turning the perennial political conflict between the Palestinians and Israel into a religious one.

Over half of them have been alleged perpetrators of stabbing, shooting and auto ramming attacks aimed at Israeli civilians and security forces.

A flash visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories by U.S. Secretary John Kerry on Tuesday, aimed at quelling the violence, has not shown any sign of success.

On Thursday, the commander of Israel’s premier paratrooper brigade, Colonel Nimrod Aloni, said tackling Palestinian violence was a matter of “a great degree of confusion”.

“We intend to bring a far more massive barrier there”, he said. Israel says the structure is a security measure meant to keep attackers out of its cities.

“The arrest and killing of the Palestinian people, along with violations by [Jewish] settlers of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, can no longer be tolerated”, Abbas declared in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

An Israeli official said government officials, however, have rejected the military’s proposals. Children as young as 11 have stabbed Israelis in the current unrest.
